Gloria Pearson operates Fashion My Future Foundation of Houston as a non-profit organization whose purpose is to raise funds to foster educational opportunities for students, teachers, and other individuals seeking a career in one of the many fields of fashion. It plans to furtherthese goals primarily by sponsoring the annual Fashion My Future Career Conference, formerly known as Career Day Houston.
To do this, the Fashion My Future Career Conference provides a full day of workshops led by industry professionals, a well known industry keynote speaker, scholarship competitions, a fashion show of student designs, a seated luncheon, the awarding of scholarships to talented students, including the coveted grand prize of a month's study at the Paris American Academy, and a college and industry supplier fair with representatives available for consultation. To quote Sydney Sheldon, " Clothing is the single biggest business in New York. A successful fashion designer can have an effect on the economy around the world. A designer's whim has a far-flung impact on everyone from cotton pickers in India, to Scottish weavers, to silkworms in China and Japan. It has an effect on the wool industry and the silk industry. The Donna Karans and Calvin Kleins and Ralph Laurens are a major economic influence." Quote from his novel, Morning, Noon and Night.
Career Day History:
For 31 years, The Fashion Group International Inc. of Houston, and The Fashion Group Foundation of Houston, Inc. have raised funds for scholarships for talented college students and senior high school students who aspire to careers in the fashion, home and beauty industries, and held an annual career day. Students competed primarily for scholarships in fashion design and merchandising and were also given access to successful business professionals via a series of business related panel discussions. In addition to monetary scholarships, the grand prize award was the opportunity to study abroad for a summer internship at the Paris American Academy in Paris, France. Prominent keynote speakers have included designers Chloe Dao, Pat Dahnke, and Carmen Marc Valvo, in addition to Laura Mercier founder and owner of Gurwich Enterprises, Janet Gurwich, and Terri Agins, Fashion Journalist for the Wall Street Journal.
In 2013 The Fashion Group International Inc. of Houston and the Fashion Group Foundation of Houston, Inc. decided to pass the torch to the Fashion My Future Foundation of Houston, Inc, which was created to carry on this fine tradition.
